Ruined privacy or more convenience?
by Martina Harvanova

We tend to complain about the e-mails or newsletters various companies send us to inform their potential buyers about the "things which are being prepared in the kitchen of the company". However helpful and well-meaning their aims are, we rather ignore them and keep wondering how they could reach us, and how it came that they have so many information about us. Well, that is just the ultimate beginning! The spychips or more mercifully called microchips foretell the future of us. An ordinary work-day morning, 7am, the alarm clock rings. You wonder why exactly this band plays their song while you are getting up. It's simple: you didn't set up the alarm, everything was done automatically because your microchip knows what radio station you listen to, what time your work begins and as a result it calculates when it should start to ring. The clothes are ready for you to be worn. It is raining outside, so the machine picked something warmer and didn't forget to pack an umbrella together with all the documents and other inevitable things you need to take to the work. Everything is done, even the car is already warmed up, you are just required to get in. "On the board" you are reminded to stop for breakfast at Starbucks. The lady at the counter already knows what you'll take. The work is boring as usual. Fortunately, your computer time to time reports that you should drink regularly or take short breaks to make your work more enjoyable. You spend the afternoon shopping. You are too lazy to try on all the items you'd like to buy, so you just look up your measures in the hand-sized laptop. When you enter a shop of Benetton, your favorite one, all the sales clerks greet you, they ask how your sick doggy is doing and pick you exactly the shirt you would choose yourself. Although you aren't friends, they know everything about you, the members of your family, your habits, preferences and even really personal and private information you would hardly tell somebody. Microchips are the source of it. When you got home, the fridge warns you about the expiry date of your milk and about the missing items that were already ordered on-line, so you the device just wanted to let you know. Your laptop checks who is on-line in all your social communication networks you are registered in and how the news about all your friends is. Before you go to bed a friendly reminder in your bedroom announces you need to go to the gym tomorrow, because today you gained some more pounds. The story maybe isn't as fictitious as it may seem to you. The start of it occurs within reach. Spychips will enable us to live even more comfortable, but for the value of privacy.

Top 20
by Claudia Sonea

IC Insights recently made a study of the semiconductor suppliers in the 1H07 ranking them on a scale from 1 to 20 according to the revenues. From last year Top 20 some movements have occurred, mostly below the first three (Intel, Samsung and TI). Qualcomm, the wireless giant company, has moved from the 17th in 2006 to 13th in 1H07 with 17 million dollars behind Infineon, the 12th runner up. Its revenues climbed 9 percent and Infineon's 6 percent. On the other side AMD, whose dark future is still in a thick mist, lost two positions and landed on the 15th, but still revenues increased 12 percent after 1H07, perhaps the new changes and deals will help the company to recover. IC Insights forecast that many semiconductor companies that lost their ranks might regain them, like in the case of TSMC that despite the highest increase of 17 percent dropped one spot. On the other hand some could never regain their original position, Freescale has dropped from the 9th place to the 16th in 1H07 and there is no hope for the sun to raise again due to the dependence on Motorola whose future is not yet stable because of the share loss in the handset market. Other companies advance slow but sure, Sony and NXC moved only one spot (from 10th to 9th and from 11th to 10th) The market is quite stable and there aren't any expectations for big changes to happen in the second half of 2007. IC Insights forecast a new orientation towards the DRAM and flash memory markets. Anyway , if you want to invest in a company or buy some shares than you should look carefully to the annual revenue of each semiconductor company and my advice would be to go with Intel because it is the best after all. Have a good fluctuation on shares!

The NUS3116
by Claudia Sonea

Everyone has problems concerning the power management of the electronic devices. You need something that would adjust to your sense of practicality like the NUS3116, an integrated charging and power switching circuit for small devices like the mobile phones. For most of the new cellular phones you have a main battery switch from which you can turn on and off at any time, then you have the wall charging switch that you use only when you are forced because you don't have anymore battery or you could use the USB charging switch. Well NSU3116 combines all the three mentioned previously, this way optimizing the charging performance and getting rid of the multitude of circuits. It provides board savings of more than 20 mm2 because it comes in a DFN-8 package of only 9 mm2.The price is at 0.80 dollars per unit in 3000 unit quantities, so it is quite expensive to acquire. I would like to have it but I cannot afford it. When ON Semiconductor, a global supplier of efficient power management solutions that created the new circuit, will lower the price I think I will buy one. The semiconductor suppliers always try to find solutions that will fit our needs, the truth is that most of them are too expensive for everyone to have the amount necessary to acquire all the technologies released. The NUS3116 is definitely a must and if you are real into practical things, it will offer you exactly what you need. Stay connected there is more to come.

Faster, cheaper, better
by Claudia Sonea

Intel has done it again! in 2004 the giant company released the 1Gbps modulator that is made of silicon, and encodes data onto a beam of light at the rate of 1Gbps. In a recent blog they have announced the speed they are heading to set and the entire concept of the product. The new technology is to be set at a rate of 40GBps. The photonic circuit may represent a solution for optical communications and to computer interconnection. Silicon attracts investors because of the low cost and the ability to be produced in high volume. The blog contains the actual process of the modulator that is based on twenty-five hybrid silicon lasers on a single chip that opens the door to greater speeds than anyone has ever dreamt. Also it uses optics fiber in order to have a greater bandwidth and to carry data further than copper, this way reducing the energy used. In January this year, they have released a new silicon optical modulator using a speed of 10Gbps and they want to get to a speed of 40Gbps in the nearby future. Great news indeed. It's faster, cheaper and better. Sounds like an ad, but the truth is that Intel is doing a great job and that is why they still can be considered number one and regarded as pioneers in the entire computer market. That is my opinion. Like the brand and a promising future for them. Anyway if it's faster count me in...because speed makes my blood pumping.
